End Polio Now

The End Polio Now Campaign is Rotary’s flagship international project. The aim is to rid the world of the wild polio virus which has devastated so many lives in the past. Over the last 25 years the number of cases world-wide has been reduced from 10s of thousands to almost single figures.

We are now ‘this close’ with only two countries left where polio still thrives: Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Last year, our then President Ben Benfield initiated a weekly ‘Good News Story’ and members were encouraged to share with those attending something positive, happy, uplifting even. For this they are asked to pop one pound coin into the ‘President’s Polio Pig’. All monies being donated to the End Polio Now campaign. Rotary International together with the Bill Gates Foundation is working hard to eradicate this terrible disease.

Ben is delighted to say that over the year the Polio Pig has collected over £400 and for every $1 Rotary raises globally the Gates Foundation matches it with a further $2.

We are proud of the fact that in 2015 we were awarded a certificate for our 2014-2015 contribution as a club to the End Polio Now: Make History Today campaign.
